Civilization and Expansion

Using Keynote or Powerpoint and working as a group at your table, create a multimedia presentation analyzing how expansion supported and influenced the economic, political, cultural and social institutions and accomplishments of two empires that we have studied. Empires could be of the following:

-Portugal
-England
-France
-Spain
-Holy Roman Empire
-Byzantine Empire
-African Kingdom
-Muslim Dynasties

Include, but not limited to: 8-10 slides, maps, pictures, detailed descriptions, drawings, paintings, video...  Projects will be presented, so prepare to answer questions for class discussions.

Exploration Map

Using the world map you received in class and the internet: 1. draw the route, 2.  dates, and 3. the country that sponsored their voyage from the list of explorers/countries below:

Explorers:
-Christopher Columbus
-Ferdinand Magellan
-Vasco da Gama
-Sir Francis Drake
-Samuel De Champlain
-Amerigo Vespucci
-Henry Hudson
-Bartolomeu Dias
-Jacques Cartier

*Some explorers made several voyages.  Draw the 1st route.

Countries: Color each country a different color.
-England
-France
-Spain
-Portugal
-Netherlands

Then, choose 2 of the explorers and write a 1/2 page summary each, describing their voyage (total of 1 page).  DO NOT CUT AND PASTE OR PLAGIARIZE!!  Tell me about exploration, not their childhood.

Foldable on African Kingdoms and Trade


Mansa Musa of  Mali

Using 2 sheets of paper create a Foldable about the "Kingdoms and Trade in Africa".  Use the "Textbook pp. 154 - 175  Each Foldable MUST include the following:


-Title and drawing on cover.

-One Section/Tab on "Early Civilizations", must include: Geography, People and Ideas, and Nubia + one more topic (student's choice).

/-One Section/Tab on "West East African Kingdoms ", must include: Ghana, Mali, and Ethiopia+ one more topic (student's choice).

-One Section/Tab on "Medieval Africa", must include: Family, Politics, and Traditions+ one more topic (student's choice).

-ALL sections must have at least one drawing to help explain the section's topics.
-Use the Who, What When, Where, and Why format.

Rise of Islam

Create a 6 scene storyboard/sequence map (comic strip-style) using drawings and narratives for each scene. Use  pages 118 - 122 from textbook or the internet for information that you might need. 
Scenes might include:
-Arabs being polytheistic
-unorganized political unity
-the Koran
-Muslims worshiping only Allah
-Muhammad's conflict in Mecca (Makkah)

*Honors students must write a 3 sentence narrative for each scene*

Write an essay from the perspective of a medieval peasant fighting in the Crusades.  Include the following terms:

Gallery Walk-Early Civilizations

Using chart paper, each table will be responsible for summarizing the early civilizations from history.  Each table will be given specific pages from the textbook.

Each table MUST have a title for their chart paper AND the following, in complete sentences, on their chart paper:
